What Is Istikhara in Islam

Istikhara is a special prayer Muslims perform when they feel confused about a decision. It simply means asking Allah to guide us toward what is best.

Whenever we are unsure about marriage, a job, business, or any important choice, Istikhara helps us place that decision in Allah’s hands instead of depending only on our own thinking.

In Istikhara, we pray two rak‘ahs and then make a du‘a, asking Allah to choose what is good for our religion, our life, and our future.

The word Istikhara comes from the Arabic word “khayr”, which means goodness. This shows that Istikhara is about seeking what is better, even if we don’t understand it right away.

Salat al-Istikhara means “the prayer of seeking guidance from Allah.” Through this prayer, we admit that Allah knows best, while our knowledge is limited.

Allah guides those who ask Him sincerely (Qur’an 1:6).

What is The Importance & Benefit of Istikhara Dua in Islam

The importance of Istikhara is clearly shown in Islam.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Istikhara to his companions for all matters, just like he taught them verses of the Qur’an.

This tells us something very important:
Istikhara is not only for big decisions, but also for everyday matters when we feel unsure.

When we perform Istikhara sincerely:

  • The heart feels lighter

  • Confusion slowly reduces

  • Trust in Allah becomes stronger

Even if the result is not what we expected, we believe that Allah chose what is better for us.
