How to Perform Istikhara (Step by Step)

How to perform istikhara

This guide explains how to pray istikhara in a simple and easy way:-

Step 1: How to Perform Istikhara (First Prepare yourself)

First, perform wudu (ablution) and choose a clean, quiet place where you can pray with focus. A calm environment helps you concentrate and make a sincere connection with Allah.

Step 2: Make a Clear Intention (Niyyah)

In your heart, make the intention that you are praying two rak‘ahs of Istikhara to seek Allah’s guidance for a specific matter. You don’t need to say it out loud—Allah knows what’s in your heart

Step 3: Pray Two Rak‘ahs

Pray two non-obligatory (nafl) rak‘ahs, just like any normal sunnah prayer. You can pray Istikhara at any time of the day except forbidden times (sunrise, sunset, and when the sun is at its peak).

You may include these two rak‘ahs in your regular sunnah prayers or pray them separately.

Step 4: Complete the Prayer Properly

Recite Surah Al-Fatiha in each rak‘ah, followed by any other surah or a few verses from the Qur’an. Finish the prayer with tashahhud, salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, and end with salam.

Step 5: Recite the Istikhara Du‘a

After completing the prayer, raise your hands and recite the Istikhara du‘a with full attention and understanding. When you reach the part that says “this matter”, clearly think about the decision you are asking Allah about.

Step 6: Trust Allah’s Guidance

After Istikhara, guidance may come as peace in your heart, ease in your decision, or obstacles being removed or placed. It does not have to come through dreams. Allah guides you in the way that is best for you.

Step 7: Take Action and Be Patient

Istikhara does not replace effort. Do your research, consult trusted people, and then move forward. If things become easy, it is a good sign. If doors close, trust that Allah protected you from something not good for you.

You may repeat Istikhara if you still feel unsure.

The Istikhara prayer is based on a hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ found in Sahih al-Bukhari.
