When Should You Pray Istikhara?

Istikhara can be prayed whenever you need guidance in making a decision, whether the matter is big or small. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Istikhara as an important part of decision-making and encouraged seeking Allah’s help for all matters, just as he taught the companions verses of the Qur’an (Sahih al-Bukhari 6382).

Many people pray Istikhara for major life decisions such as choosing a career, deciding on a marriage proposal, buying a house, or moving to a new place. However, Istikhara is not limited to big choices only. The companions and early Muslims would seek Allah’s guidance even for matters that may seem small to us.

Along with Istikhara, Islam also encourages Istishara, which means consulting trusted and wise people. The Prophet ﷺ himself consulted companions like Abu Bakr (ra) and Umar (ra). Taking advice from people and then turning to Allah through Istikhara creates balance and clarity in decision-making
